Conjoined is a series of watercolor paintings representing twins with deformities that are incompatible with life. The alchemic Rebis (from Latin res bina, dual or double matter) is a double-gendered, divine hermaphrodite that symbolizes the reconciliation of spirit and matter, as well as the special substance to be created at the end of the alchemical opus. This was called the “tincture”, the “powder”, the “elixir of life” and later the philosopher’s stone”. When radioactivity was discovered, its mysterious power was associated with the alchemical idea of the philosopher’s stone. Radioactive exposure can cause fetus deformities that are incompatible with life.
